Lane (Fitz Henry) is born in Gloucester.

Born Nathaniel Rogers Lane, Fitz Henry Lane works initially as a shoemaker’s apprentice, then comes to Boston in 1832 to work in William Pendleton’s lithography shop. Lane becomes known initially for his commercial work, which features townscapes and city views, then returns to Gloucester in 1848, takes up painting, and becomes known for his seascapes and harbor views. He dies in Gloucester on August 13, 1865.
